JIANNAN WANG
  • Contest: Peoples of the North
  • Note: A Chukchi sea hunter throwing a harpoon to a gray whale.
  • Locate: Lorino, Chukotka, Russia
  • City: Anadyr
  • Comment: Every year, at least 20,000 gray whales come to the Bering Strait. According to the quotas set by the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the Chukchi people can take 140 Gray whales for subsistence in any one year (2013-2018). Whaling in the traditional way is not only a rule of IWC, but also the glory of the Chukchi sea hunters.
